Purpose: navapsvc.exe - Norton Antivirus AutoProtect service (Windows 2000/XP). Provides real-time virus protection. If you disable this it will improve performance (disk in particular), but can be risky if you are prone to being infected by computer viruses. Even with real-time scanning disabled, you can manually scan for viruses using Norton AntiVirus or schedule a regular scan using Windows Task Scheduler. To disable real time scanning, Start Norton Antivirus and select Tools | Options from the menu. In the Auto-Protect tab, clear the check box next to "Load Auto-Protect at Startup."

navapsvc.exe is required by third-party software or hardware and should not disabled.
