PC Pitstop OverDrive Beta

Hi Everyone!

Long time no see. What? It's past Ground Hog's Day? Man, I feel like I've been buried in a hole. The reason is because I have been working non stop on a (w)hole redesign of our world renowned Full Tests. We are renaming the service, PC Pitstop OverDrive Beta. Our plan is to run the beta for as long as necessary to weed out any last bugs. The product has already undergone substantial testing, but it is not possible to foresee every situation without a formal and public beta period. Once that is over, our plan is to move our signature Full Tests to OverDrive. Vrooom!

This has been a non stop labor of love for the last four months. The changes are substantial and I encourage everyone to check it out and let us know all of your feedback. Good, bad and ugly.

I'll try to review the major changes here.

OverDrive BETA

Pitstop Full Tests Shift into OverDrive BETA

Check out the redesign of our world renowned Full Tests. Scan your PC again for a new look and better results.

Web 2.0. OverDrive uses a lot of the latest Web 2.0 technologies. I used mouse roll overs, click able images, and tabs heavily throughout the design. I hope the use of these technologies helps people quickly diagnose common PC problems, and learn about their PC in a quick and intuitive interface.

OverDrive Browser. The system browser allows you to manage easily manage all of your PCs under one user account.

Security. Not only does OverDrive check all aspects of your PCs performance, there is also a full security. OverDrive includes a virus scan, spyware scan, and a scan of the critical security settings in your browser. In order to keep the test short, OverDrive scans active memory for malware. Before a malware can begin to do its dirty deeds, first it must be in memory, so we catch over 90% of the problems of the slower scanners.

Performance. OverDrive does an unbelievable job in performance. A registry scan, a full benchmark suite (including internet), disk analysis, processor analysis, and on and on. Don't forget to mouse over each test, and then click to learn more about the details of each and every test.

Driver Scan. Driver Alert has been an amazingly successful product, and our unique scan and match technology is also built into OverDrive. The Pit Notes, along with all the useful driver information.

Software. The software area has one huge improvement, but it is behind the scenes. The database driving the software categorization has been majorly enhanced. We now have the world's largest database of running processes. In addition, we have improved our categorization techniques. There is a new category called "Disable". These are the applications that are in memory and they serve no purpose other than eat up memory and CPU cycles. A lot of people call them craplets.

World Rank. Here's a new feature and I am really excited. After I run a test, it tells me how I compare to the rest of the world in five key areas, processor peformance, memory performance, disk performance, graphics performance, and internet performance. Now you can really see how your PC stacks up against the rest of the world. I guess that's why they call us PC Pitstop.

New Layout We now have a new more attractive layout with less clutter and hopefully more useful information. You will also note that we have an RSS feed from PC World. This is the start of a new partnership with the most revered publication in the PC space.

There is so much more in this application, but rather than talk about it, please check it out. And let's talk about it here.

HAPPY GROUNDHOG'S DAY.

I ran it on my Dell XP Pro machine.
It always tell me I need to defrag - but I always defrag before I run it.
It tells me I need to update 3 drivers, Network, Mouse, and Video...Howwever, when it goes to install these drivers I get a message the the drivers that are installed are newer than the one I am installing and it suggests I keep the original driver.
On the Details page - ALL of the customized suggestions take me to "PAGE NOT FOUND"

Other than that - it was good....
actually, you can disable the sound tray icon, then go and enable the defualt little speaker thatwindows usually shows

You should be able to set it to 0% which actually allocates 200MB's, the minimum amout needed to run System Restore and about enough for three restore points with the average system.

[attachmentid=1035]

[b] I am using a dell Dimension 8100 with Win XP sp2 and 768 MB RAM. Plenty of HDD space remaining ~ 30GB. My system restore memory setting is set for 3%(of a ~ 40 GB HDD) and yet when I go into System Restore I see only ONE system restore point has been set for the entire month of Feb and I canNOT go back to any previous month(I click on the back arrow and nothing happens) to see if any points have been set previous to Feb. The System restore tab in the System properties Window shows that "Turn off system restore" is NOT checked and the Status shows that drive C is being monitored. WHY is there NO more than ONE system restore point????????
Thanks for ANY and ALL help. Have a good day/night.
One other thing, in the Software>Processes section says my soundcard tray icon should be disabled. This should be optional IMO, it certainly can't be disabled on my laptop as it has no seperate volume control so disabling it results in me having no volume control at all. So should be optional IMO, not disable.

(Sigmatel soundcard - Process is stsystra.exe)
Doesn't work for me, runs the tests no problem but I get no results. After the page where you enter your upload/download speeds etc it just takes me back to the start page (Address - http://pcpitstop.com/betapit/default.asp). If it's relevant theres a message above the "Welcome back..." that says 'Intro: false'

WinXP Home, IE7 (both fully updated) and logged in to PCP.

EDIT: Works if using the anonymous test, doesn't work logged in
Unable to use overdrive beta because I get the 'some application is trying to close this window in an incorrect way - something like that" message. I can run regular tests only in debug mode if I don't run the 'disk health' portion...

Forgot to add - I didn't have the "some application is trying to close this window in an incorrrect way' message until I installed win XP SP 3...

it's happened a few times to me, after 2am here, but it's not slow, it simply doesn't load

works now though, loads instantly actually, lol

sorry though, not trying to be a pain in the :filtered:
wdey,

Get this problem fixed? It was a little slow...
beta test loads a totally blank first screen again, can't do anything...
Thanks Sho great news you're back on the X-Mas card list.
The checks and x's in the results table have been downsized a little.

so does the beta test not have the ability to load up the utility?

As far as I know, it should have that ability. You may have had an older utility installed that didn't support the OverDrive changes. When I deleted my utility completely and visited the OverDrive tests, the activex popped up and downloaded just fine. When it was half deleted/broken however it didn't tell me I needed another utility and wouldn't finish the test.

Perhaps it detected that you had a utility installed and redirected you even though it told you you needed a new one. :: I'm glad it works now!

Not sure about the mechanics of the activex control, but we'll keep this in mind for the future.
ah ha! well, i tired the beta again, got stuck in the loop. i knew the old test worked, so i went to try it again. it asked to load a new utility, i did, tan through the test, and now the beta works like it should!

http://pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=19717472

i know, i haven't been keeping up on it, LOL

so does the beta test not have the ability to load up the utility?
I am not sure this will help, but try visiting http://www.pcpitstop.com/testax.asp

Also, can you run the normal full tests and not the betapit tests? Or do both not work? The second would make more sense.

I tried deleting my PC Pitstop utility and broke my test on purpose. I am not sure how to clean it completely to imitate your issue, but visiting the page above prompted the install of the utility. The test still ran for me but instead was hanging on "checking signatures" which is another problem altogether who's solution is in the forum.
We're working on that Andrew.

IE7, latest MS update patches, i am loged in and sitting at the comparison screen, click scan this pc, get to the "lets go" page, pop up that i need the utility and back to comparison page.

test works on my vista machine, for the most part atleast, working with mark on some driver issues.

edit>> and now the browse.asp page (comparison page i think?) loads to an empty black screen with no error messages, LOL
wdeydwondrer, can you provide some details about your browser and tell me if you logged in when you tried to run the test? Has the test worked on another machine of yours?
This is an XP machine and its taking exactly the same time to run the new test as it did the old test (2 minutes) and I dont have a problem with that.
Will anything be done about the 2D v 3D issue with the video test?
grand, now i'm trying it out on my xp pro machine and i get to the 'lets go' screen, and it says that i don't have the pit stop utility installed and to take me to the page where i may do so. well, it brings me back to the comparison page, and loops like this if tried again.
Bear: PC Pitstop Full Tests Shift into OverDrive (Mon, 18 Feb 2008 21:03:09 GMT)
i have tested a few times and the one thing that seems odd to me is the fact i get driver updates for my nic card but the driver that is suggested is for a different card and it can not be found on the manufactures web site, this is also true for my on bord sound. Other than that i found the test a lot faster with more detailed information given.
