I usually stick with windows update for drivers as long as my stuff continues to work. I have a tri-boot system (XP Home, XP Pro, & Vista Premium). Everything works on both XP sides. My dial-up modem and my all-in-one Lexmark printer do not have drivers that work with Vista a year after it was launched for businesses. Due to this, and the fact many programs older than 3 years or so do not work on it, I can't recommend it as a good OS for novices. Dell still has XP systems for sale. My system is only 4 years old. I had an HP printer that was 10 years old that worked with vista (since upgraded to a newer HP), but my 5 year old Lexmark will not. My intel 537ep modem (as old as my system (4 years) will not work properly. I can force it to use XP drivers, but then I'll deal with the BSOD on shutdown every time. How can Vista be released with so many published driver/ program errors? Hasn't this multi-billion dollar company learned anything from ME? Yes, Vista is pretty and apparently secure, but the novice user needs an OS that's reliable, doesn't bog down a system, has drivers for most of the hardware on the market, and works with most PC programs. No one wants to pay extra for a program or a piece of hardware they've been using for years.
